Research summary
Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) is the term used to describe a range of inherited retinal diseases. Individually they are rare, but collectively they now represent the major cause of blindness in working age adults. RP is characterised by signs of inflammation. Although the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood, activating the inflammatory cascade is thought to exacerbate cell death. In this pilot study we will test the efficacy of Iluvien, a commonly used intraocular steroid, to reduce the inflammatory response in selected patients with RP. In doing so we hope to (a) slow the rate of visual loss, and (b) identify objective parameters for monitoring disease progression.
