Research summary
Insulin like growth factor I (IGF-I) is an important regulator of growth in babies. However studies in the newborn looking at changes in levels over time have been limited by the volume of blood required. IGF-I is currently being tested as a new drug for preterm infants but current methods do not allow monitoring levels very easily. Tests require to be sent to special lbaoratories and require relatively large amounts of blood. We aim to investigate a new method of measuring IGF-I levels more quickly and on smaller blood samples. This method has been tested using blood samples from older children but due to the difference in how IGF-I is carried in the blood in the newborn it is important that the methods are validated using newborn blood samples. This study will take samples from 30-50 newborn babies to compare results using standard methods with the new methodology.
