Research summary
IgA vasculitis (also called Henoch Schonlein Purpura, HSP) is an illness that causes the blood vessels in the body to get inflamed. This leads to a skin rash, painful joints, tummy aches and can affect the kidneys. It happens in people of all ages but it is more common in children. It is usually a mild illness that completely gets better but in some people it can be more severe. In 2 out of every 100 people it will cause severe renal failure needing dialysis and in many others it will cause chronic kidney disease. It is not known what causes the illness. We are trying to find out who is at greatest risk of kidney problems and why. We are looking to collect information on a cohort of patients with IgA vasculitis and then do scientific sub studies. We would like permission to use blood or urine samples for the scientific sub studies to help us understand what is happening with the immune system and why it attacks the kidney.
