  • Research summary

In light of the limited success of psychological approaches, weight loss surgery (WLS) offers highly effective intervention with life-long and highly pervasive effects for the individual’s physical and mental wellbeing (Greenberg, Sogg & Perna, 2012). WLS has been discussed by many authors as imposed behavioural intervention which can sometimes paradoxically result in a renewed sense of personal control over eating behaviour, which may also extend to greater control within social relationships (Ogden, Clementi & Aylwin, 2006). This study will aim to investigate alterations in patient identity approximately 2 years following bariatric surgery. The data will be analysed using Discourse Analysis. The project will examine the theme of identity and discourses around power and control focusing on how an individual’s social landscape alters following surgery. The objective of the project is to generate a shared narrative or ‘ecology of experience’ (Clark & Chalmers, 1998) which can be placed within the context of lived experiences of obesity.
