Research summary
Restrictive practice (include physical restraint, seclusion, or chemical restraint) is widely known to occur as part of practice in mental health inpatient settings, but guidelines recommend it should be short term and only used as a last resort in situations where people may be a risk to themselves or others ( Department of Health, Positive and Proactive care,2015) Restrictive Reduction Network standards published in January 2021, commissioned by Health Education England recommend training for staff that ensures understanding of human rights and relevant legislation such as the Mental Health Act code of practice, Mental Capacity Act and Equality Act, are applied in compatible ways with the person’s rights, and person-centred care, taking positive steps to protect their rights.
Also, in accordance NHS Digital which has introduced a new data set reporting on restraints since June 2020. This study will aim to identify clinical, social, and demographic factors that are associated with restrictive practice, in mental health inpatient units in a trust which serves a population in rural East Midlands, UK.It will study quantitative data of restrictive practice on inpatient admissions to adult acute mental health units between 1st January 2020 to 31st December 2020, measuring one restrictive practice as dependent variable, it will analyse data by regression analysis to identify factors associated with restrictive practice. Clinical and demographic variables such as gender, age, ethnicity, disability benefits, no. of previous admissions, and admissions during the year 2020, admission status, source of admission, primary diagnosis, other diagnosis, and length of stay and Health of the Nation Outcome Scales scoring on admission and discharge will be measured.
Qualitative review of patient, family/carer and staff views who have been involved in the experience of restrictive practice will be studied by conducting semi structured interviews with the participants, carer, and staff.
