Research summary
There is no reliable population level information on breast cancer recurrence in the UK. To address this, researchers at the University of Oxford have been collaborating with Public Health England to identify recurrences in women registered with breast cancer using a number of routinely collected data sources. As part of this study, an algorithm has been developed to identify which women have had a recurrence of their breast cancer and, for those who did, the date of the recurrence. This algorithm has had promising results when validated internally against recurrence information collected by the former West Midlands Cancer Intelligence Unit. However, it has not yet been validated nationally against an external and independent dataset. The aim of this project is to undertake this external validation using data from a UK-based randomized controlled trial. If can be shown that the algorithm produces valid results, then it will be possible for the first time to have nationwide long-term recurrence data for women with breast cancer.
