Research summary
Renal diseases are common and affect a large number of people in many different ways. Some of these conditions affect how kidneys work to clean the body of waste products, in some cases causing them to fail completely, while others can cause highly specific problems like abnormal blood tests or pain. \nUrine tests have long been used to tell us about how kidneys are affected by certain conditions including how well they are working and the nature of the disease, but these tests are currently quite simple. \nWe use state of the art technology to look at substances in urine samples (e.g proteins and the chemicals that control them) to see changes that were previously invisible. In some patients undergoing dialysis we would also like to look at the waste dialysis fluid for these substances. \nWe hope to use the information we gather to better understand how healthy kidneys work and what goes wrong in a variety of diseases. With this knowledge we aim to develop better tests to diagnose, predict the course of, and improve treatment for people with kidney problems. We aim to invite a wide variety of patients who may have kidney diseases who are under the care of Addenbrooke’s Hospital Cambridge to this study. Those who agree to participate will simply be asked to provide a sample of urine or waste dialysis fluid (if relevant) that would normally be discarded.
