Research summary
The incidence of endometrial cancer in the UK has increased by more than 50% in the last 20 years (Cancer Research UK). That is largely attributed to obesity. Leicester City has the highest incidence of endometrial cancer in England. The reason behind that is poorly understood but it is believed to be associated with the diverse ethnic background of the city's population. This study will examine blood and tissue samples of patients with endometrial cancer in order to identify a high-risk profile of the disease. This will help identifying patients at higher risk of developing the disease and might lead to the development of a prediction model. It might also help in the development of more individualised treatment options for those with advanced disease based on the different molecular/ genetic characteristics of the disease.
All patients with endometrial cancer deemed suitable for surgical management will be invited to participate. Blood and tissue samples will prospectively be collected from patients undergoing surgery for endometrial cancer in the Middle England Gynaecological Cancer Centre. The aim would be to recruit 250 patients over a 3 year period.REC name
