  • Research summary

This research aims to develop a core outcome set for cardiac arrest clinical trials. A core outcome set is a group of outcome measures that should be reported as a minimum in a particular health area and aims to improve standardised reporting within trials form a particular health area. We will use a range of methods to identify what outcomes are most important to health professionals, researchers and patients.
The first step of the research is to identify potential outcomes to be included in a core outcome set which will involve two approaches. 1) We have completed a systematic review of cardiac arrest randomised controlled trials over the last ten years to identify outcomes that are currently reported. 2) We will conduct semi-structured interviews with cardiac arrest patients or their partners to identify outcomes that are important to the patients and to highlight any outcomes that have not been previously reported.

Once potential outcomes have been identified a Delphi process will be used to rank outcomes on their importance. Participants will include health professionals involved in the care and research of cardiac arrest patients, policy makers, cardiac arrest patients and their partners. The process will be available via the internet and post. We will conduct three rounds of survey asking participants to rank a list of outcomes on a numerical scale to indicate importance. In the first round participants will be invited to suggest any outcomes they feel are missing. After each round of Delphi, results will be collected anonymously and group results will be circulated allow for participants to change their response. We anticipate three rounds will be required to gain a sense of consensus.
The research will conclude with a consensus meeting with participants from all key stakeholder groups to bring all findings from the Delphi process together.
