Research summary
We wish to explore the feasibility of identifying and optimising treatment of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) within low to medium risk offenders in contact with the probation system. It is estimated that over 25% of inmates have ADHD, which exacerbates risk-taking, impulsive behaviour, resulting in poor inter-personal relationships, low employment levels, increased conduct disorder and increased substance use disorder. By identifying and treating individuals with ADHD when under supervision by the probationary Community Rehabilitation Company, we wish to reduce the symptoms of ADHD, improve compliance with probation orders and rehabilitation, and ultimately reduce reoffending.
