  • Research summary

Emergency department (ED) triage is a potentially complex process that involves prioritising patients attending hospital with a medical emergency on the basis of the urgency with which they require medical treatment. Traditionally, triage has been undertaken by nursing staff but awareness of the potential value of experienced senior medical staff in the process has led to a growing interest in and the use of senior doctor at triage (SDT).
However, there is lack of information about how the SDT is organized and which personnel perform this type of work. This PhD project involves two stages
1- Online survey of ED consultants regarding triage practices across England. This study was completed and a number of consultants were recruited via the survey to participate in the 2nd stage of this PhD project.
2- Qualitative interviews with ED staff regarding perceptions on Senior Doctor at Triage. The aim of the qualitative interviews is to ask ED staff regarding their views on the different models of senior doctor triage and the challenges associated with establishing these systems and sustaining them.
This study will assist in gaining better understanding of senior doctor triage process. This can help inform the best SDT practice for ED attendances.
