  • Data collection arrangements

The purpose of this study is to collect colonoscopy videos within a database that can be used to improve the performance of endoscopists in detecting lesions or polyps which could lead to cancer.
Patients will be asked to consent to the collection of colonoscopy videos. The study will last the duration of a colonoscopy procedure and will collect the video of the procedure from when the colonoscope enters the patient until it is removed.
This study will use de-identified (pseudonymised) data only, patients’ names/dates of birth will not be stored with the research information, but each video will be given a unique research number, and the research team at the hospital will maintain a record between the research ID and the patient’s real details. A member of the research team will pseudonymise the data.
Data collected will be de-identified and stored on a hard drive which will be locked away in a secure office at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust with a coded lock only accessible by the research team. Data stored on hard drives will be encrypted and password protected.

  • Research programme

This study is being done as part of a PhD study looking into improving the detection of cancers in the gut at Imperial College London. This database will provide colonoscopy videos that can be used by researchers to help improve the detection of lesions or polyps in the gut which could lead to colorectal cancer. Researchers will have to send written requests to the Chief Investigator (CI) if requiring access to the database. The CI will critique each request. Depending on how they intend to use the data from the database, researchers may need to gain further ethical approval from REC for their study.
