Research summary
Thousands of people die every year in the UK because of cardiac arrest which occurs suddenly and without warning. The majority are due to a heart attack, but in those under 40 years of age this is due to a genetic problem which can be passed on to blood relatives. Tragically, a sudden arrest is sometimes the first manifestation and whilst it is too late for them, it may be possible to help their surviving relatives. Screening for these patients early using questionnaires, a recording of the electrical activity of the heart and genetic testing may save many lives. This programme helps identify markers of disease as well as discovering new genes which can cause heart disease and sudden death.
