Research summary
National healthcare policies emphasise the importance of considering cultural identity and delivering appropriate care for minority ethnic and religious groups. NHS mental health services and voluntary sector organisations (VSOs) in Bradford plan to implement a culturally adapted version of Behavioural Activation therapy for depression (BA-M), which has proven effective in reducing depression within Muslim communities (Mir et al., 2023; Dawood et al., 2023).
This implementation study, conducted by researchers at the University of Leeds in collaboration with mental health commissioners and service providers in Bradford, will evaluate BA-M’s implementation and develop guidance for future delivery. Researchers will train NHS and VSO staff to deliver BA-M and interview managers, commissioners, therapists, BA-M service users, and service user advocates at three time points—before, during, and after one year of implementation. Up to 50 stakeholders will be interviewed, either online or in person. Participants will be recruited via NHS and VSO partners, and interviews of up to 60 minutes will be conducted by an experienced Research Fellow using a topic guide with indicative questions. Interviews will explore barriers and facilitators to implementation and potential solutions.
The Chief Investigator and Research Fellow will also participate in a monthly Quality Improvement Collaborative with key stakeholders to review implementation progress and address emerging challenges. Meeting discussions and action points, including anonymised aggregated data on service use and delivery, will be documented. These discussions will be informed by a synthesis of existing literature and an agreed theory of change. Meeting attendees will not be asked for individual consent, however all Quality Improvement Collaborative (QIC) members will be asked to join on the basis that meetings are being observed and transcripts will be used to provide research data.
