Research summary
In the UK, around 1:166 people live with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). IBD is a debilitating inflammatory disease of the gut. We know that having IBD can impact on people’s activity during the day, their sleep and their fatigue levels. What we don’t know is if how physically active some is, or how much sleep they get, can impact on whether their disease will be more active or not and whether this impacts on their fatigue.
The IBD-Movement study at the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust and University of Hertfordshire, is a feasibility study to see if we can find out if the level of activity and sleep patterns impacts on whether patients get a disease flare or not and to find out if using a specialised watch which measures movement (called an accelerometer) and questionnaires about their quality of life, fatigue levels and sleep can help us to answer this question.REC name
