  • Research summary

IBD fatigue is common and arises from peripheral and central processes, which are equally important. Physical fatigue is linked to reduced muscle mass and quality, while central fatigue is a progressive exercise-induced reduction in voluntary muscle activation due to failure of the central nervous system.
We hypothesise that the aetiology of IBD fatigue lies collectively with peripheral muscle deconditioning and brain central fatigue, secondary to a reduction in cardio-respiratory fitness and cardiac output. Thus, both central and peripheral processes contribute to fatigue development.
We aim to measure i) cardiorespiratory fitness, ii) skeletal muscle deconditioning and iii) central perfusion in fatigued and non-fatigued Crohn’s disease (CD) patients, and healthy- age and sex-matched asymptomatic controls using non-invasive, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy (MRS) techniques.
This study will unravel the alterations in whole body physiology that occur in IBD fatigue, allowing an improved design of appropriate nutritional, exercise or pharmacological interventions.
