  • Research summary

The development of an education programme for young people with type 1 diabetes designed to reduce fear of hypoglycaemia.
Fear of hypoglycaemia (where blood glucose is 3.9 mmol/L or less) is common and is associated with poorer quality of life in young people with type 1 diabetes. One bad experience (e.g. hypoglycaemic seizure or loss of consciousness) can lead to years of worry and the resulting avoidance of hypoglycaemia can lead to hyperglycaemia, increasing the risk of long-term complications of diabetes. The aim of the research is to develop an education programme for young people with type 1 diabetes designed to reduce fear of hypoglycaemia. The research will target young people aged 16 to 20 years who attend St James's University Hospital for their diabetes care and use a qualitative approach. Semi-structured interviews will be used to capture detailed description of young people’s personal perspectives and experiences of fear of hypoglycaemia and how that affects their diabetes management. A hypothesis will be generated from the data and this will be checked with the members of a focus group consisting of research participants. The focus group members will be invited to design an education programme using a participatory research approach.
