Research summary
There is a large amount of referrals sent to the periodontal (gum disease) department by general dentists that are unsuitable for hospital based (secondary care) consultant led services. The aim of this study is to evaluate the use of hygienist/therapist to triage referred patients and determine their suitability to be seen by the consultant led clinic. This may effectively reduce number of inappropriate referrals seen by consultants in secondary care and hence increase the effective use of consultant time.
