Research summary
Hull and the East Riding is a diverse area where people from many nationalities and socioeconomic backgrounds live. The demographics of Hull has changed significantly in the past twenty years. Significantly, the proportion of people who have emigrated to Hull from areas of high Mycobacterium Tuberculosis (MTB) and Hepatitis B prevalence in the past 20 years has grown yearly. It seems that this has not corresponded to an equivalent growth in identified cases of TB and Hepatitis B. Both MTB and Chronic Hepatitis B (CHB) are diseases which can cause permanent organ damage and death, which can be avoided if early treatment is initiated. Early treatment can only be initiated if cases are detected. Therefore, given up to date epidemiological data provided by the 2021 census of England and Wales along with readily available information regarding MTB and Hepatitis B prevalence, it is possible to estimate the number of cases of MTB and Hepatitis B in the Hull and East Yorkshire area. This can be then compared to the known numbers of cases, using Hull University Teaching Hospital’s clinic lists and microbiology data to assess whether a discrepancy exists between observed and expected cases, alongside whether these discrepancies are disproportionately represented in different areas of the city, nationalities, age or sex. This study should help in laying the path for developing tools that can improve detection rate of these two diseases.
