Research summary
Attendance for cervical cancer screening is falling. There are a large number of women who have defaulted from the screening programme for a variety of reasons. National screening programmes are changing from the "smear test" wherein a sample of cervical cells are collected by a clinician and sent for a cytological examination to a programme wherein the cells are sent for microbiological testing for the presence of HPV. HPV is linked with pre cancerous states. We hope that by offering defaulters the opportunity to self collect a sample for testing we will have opportunity to reassure women who test negative for the virus and offer opportunity of treatment for those who may need it.
The test is validated and results from the study will be beneficial for the participants and may contribute to the body of evidence regarding the usefulness of the HPV testing approach.REC name
