Research summary
This research will investigate how therapy goals are created in cognitive behavioural therapy by a therapist and therapy client. This project will help researchers and therapists to understand some of the things that can influence how these goals are created (things like the quality of the relationship between therapist and therapy client). The information analysed in this study will be therapy tapes that have been collected as part of normal clinical practice. Consent for these tapes to be used in research was collected when the person entered therapy. This project will investigate goal setting by using the qualitative analysis technique of Discourse Analysis(DA). DA involves looking at what people say and thinking about what influences what they say. Tapes containing the discourse relevant to goal setting will be accessed by the researcher. Tapes from 5 different therapy dyads will be accessed. The therapy undertaken was CBT and the therapy clients are all adults.
