Research summary
Only a small number of treatment programmes currently exist which address violent behaviour by mentally disordered offenders. In order to take into account the complex needs these individuals have it is necessary for programmes to consider the individual’s motivation to change. In the current study a quantitative approach was taken using existing retrospective data collected from previous programmes, observational records and using clinical reports to form additional variables, such as motivation. The aim of this research is to explore whether motivation in psychiatric patients, affects their response to treatment in the Violent Offender Treatment Programme (VOTP). Other analyses will compare any differences between a medium and a high security hospital in order to determine whether security level also affects motivation. Using the Stages of Change model to measure motivation it is predicted that patients with higher levels of motivation will show greater improvements on outcomes such as anger, violent behaviour and risk of re-offending, compared to those with low motivation.
