Research summary
Introduction : Physicians including Psychiatrists, show variability and inaccuracies in diagnosis and treatment of their patients, and do not routinely implement evidence-based medical and psychiatric treatment for their patients. They use a wide range of cognitive strategies during these clinical encounters. These strategies include analytical at one end of the spectrum and the less explicit intuitive strategy at the other end, resulting in observed variations in diagnosis and clinical decisions. It is therefore important to study and characterise the nature of Psychiatrists' decisions making in order to propose the most effective intervention, to improve medical education and clinical practice.
It is on this background that this study is designed with the aim of exploring how Psychiatrist make clinical decisions by answering the following research questions
1) What are Psychiatrists' sources of information for decision making?
2) How do they weigh the gathered information?Methodology/method: The study is situated within the qualitative research paradigm.Video elicitation interviews, using semi-structured , topic guide interviews will be conducted among 18 to 20 purposefully sampled Psychiatrists in Forth Valley NHS Health Board. Thematic analysis of obtained data will be conducted to generate the main themes. Study findings will be presented in academic conferences and published in peer review journals.
