  • Research summary

Driven by both national and international policy, children with long-term disabilities and their families are being increasingly recognised as key collaborators in the planning and delivery of their care. It is the responsibility of paediatric health professionals to ensure that parents are empowered to take on this additional role; however, there is little evidence regarding how this is most successfully achieved.

In the proposed study, a sample of at least 20 parents who care for children with long-term disabilities will be interviewed to explore their experiences of accessing and making use of health-related information about their child. Using a grounded theory approach, data collected will be used to generate theory about how parents might be better supported to successfully engage with health-related information.

Parents will be recruited from a single NHS trust and interviews will be conducted, in a location chosen by the participants, by an experienced/skilled paediatric health professional.
