Research summary: HOW DO GENERAL HOSPITALS RESPOND TO PATIENTS DIAGNOSED WITH PERSONALITY DISORDER WHO ARE DISTRESSED?

The proposed study builds on a scoping review, undertaken to explore the nature of violent and disturbed behaviours amongst general hospital inpatients, diagnosed with personality disorder. There is little clarity about assessment and treatment of personality disorders within general hospital settings. This research will begin to address the void in the research literature.

This research will use a multiple case study design. Case studies are useful to describe experiences and how something works. It is intended, up to ten patients, with a diagnosis of personality disorder, referred for liaison psychiatry input, will be identified. Patients will be invited to provide an interview about personal experiences of being in a general hospital. Patients will also be asked to consent to 48 hours of healthcare records being used as part of the study. Healthcare professionals/support staff from a range of clinical specialities will be asked to provide an interview if they have worked with a participating patient. Each case study will therefore comprise a patient, a range of healthcare professionals/support staff and 48 hours of individual patient records.

The overall aim of analysis will be to describe how the hospital system works and what the effects are. This research is important because it has potential to report experiences and risks in a service delivery context, which are currently unreported. This study has the has the potential to influence practice, policy and inform future research priorities.

The research will be undertaken by a self funding PhD student. The study will recruit for up to 12 months. An honorary contract will be sought from Lancashire Care and a letter of access will be issued by East Lancashire Hospitals NHS trust.
