  • Research summary

This research project aims to explore how mental health crisis resolution practitioners manage contextual features of the process (known as gatekeeping) of deciding whether or not a person requires a mental health inpatient admission. By contextual features, this means aspects of the process that are not direct signs or symptoms of mental health problems, or specified risks associated with these. Existing research suggests that contextual factors might include availability of resources (such as beds themselves, or community-based resources that might help avoid admission) or expectations of involved parties (such as the referrer, or the service user themselves). The study wishes to explore how practitioners negotiate such factors on both a practical and emotional level.

This will be a qualitative study using in-depth semi-structured interviews with a desired sample of 5-8 participants (minimum 3). It's approach will be Interpretative Phenomenological analysis, which is well-suited to obtaining rich qualitative detail on subjective experience and sense-making activity.
