  • Research summary

Despite evidence for benefits of hearing aid use, 54% of adult patients use their hearing aids less than 4 hours per day. The consultations between audiologists and adult patients may provide an opportunity to promote hearing aid use. The I-PLAN is the intervention in audiology that focuses on the behaviour of audiologists during hearing aid fitting consultation. The I-PLAN has yet to be evaluated. The present study, therefore, aims to investigate feasibility of an implementation of the I-PLAN intervention to promote hearing aid use among new adult hearing aid patients. In order to achieve this, two groups of participants, audiologists and adult patients, will be grouped into the standard care or I-PLAN care group. Audiologists in the I-PC group will attend the I-PLAN 45-minutes training program on how to collaborate with their patients to produce a behaviour plan for hearing aid use. Consultations of audiologists with patients in both groups will be video-recorded. Patients hearing aid outcome will be measured in average time spent in a hearing aid use using data-logging feature in a hearing aid and self-reported hearing aid use at 6 weeks and self-reported hearing aid use only at 3 months and 6 months. The hearing-related quality of life questionnaire will be recorded by a self-administered questionnaire, between baseline, 6 weeks, 3 months and 6 months.
