  • Research summary

This study will use a mixed methods cross-sectional approach to answer the research question on how do foot health problems after a stroke affect gait and quality of life. In doing so, a qualitative approach will be used to determine what foot health problems stroke survivors experience and how it impacts daily life. Secondly, a Delphi study will be completed with healthcare professionals' to understand how they assess and treat foot health problems. Finally, biomechanical, vascular, neuromuscular and sensory function in stroke survivors and healthy age-matched individuals will be assessed using markerless 3D motion capture, ankle brachial pressure index, surface EMG and the 10-gram monofilament. This study was funded by Great Foundations and eligible participants include, individuals who have had a stroke at least 6 months prior to commencement of study, healthcare professionals' actively working in the NHS and individuals between the ages of 18-85 who have not been diagnosed with having a stroke. This study will be conducted at Lancaster University but stroke survivors and age-matched individuals will be recruited through NHS sites who have agreed to support with participant identification and local charity partners. Healthcare professionals who will be taking part in the Delphi study will be recruited from NHS sites. This study will be completed over three years as a PhD.
