Research summary
Chronic pain is estimated to affect over 40% of community dwelling older adults. Pain medication prescribing is highest in older adults, with substantial increases in recent decades, yet this population remains under-researched. Long-term pain medication usage has several side effects and limited positive impact for many people. This 18-month development grant will address these issues and provide the foundation for a full programme grant, to codesign a safer prescribing framework and guide older adults towards alternative solutions to pain medication. Components for this framework will be identified according to the preferred approaches identified by the older adults themselves to be further developed and tested in the future programme.
