Research summary
The research question is: What are the self-reported facilitators and barriers to people doing home practice in between sessions of a mindfulness for psychosis group? This is a qualitative study, which involves asking people about their experiences. Participants will be interviewed individually, by one of two specially trained postgraduate research students. People can take part in the study if they receive care from a community mental health team (CMHT), and have taken part in a mindfulness for psychosis group as part of their usual care in the past 2 years. Participants will be asked about what made it easier or harder to do home practice exercises during a mindfulness for psychosis group, using a standard interview topic guide. Interviews will take place either in person at the CMHT or over the phone, according to whatever people prefer. Participants will not have to answer any question they do not wish to, and can take a break, or stop the interview altogether anytime they like. Interviews will be audiotaped, with participant consent, and later transcribed for analysis. The qualitative method for data analysis is a well-established method, known as thematic analysis. In simple terms this means looking for patterns in what people say across different interviews, and grouping common themes together to identify the main issues. Participants will be offered the opportunity to receive a copy of the final research report. The findings will be written up for submission as the student’s MSc dissertation, and also submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed study.
