Research summary
This study is evaluating the number of patients undergoing surgery for breast, colorectal, gynae and renal cancers, as well melanoma and sarcoma, who have leftover surgical tissue (ie excess to diagnostic requirements) that may undergo a novel procedure called 'homogenisation'. In theory, homogenisation allows the majority of the tumour cells to undergo various diagnostic tests, reducing the bias associated with sampling only a few areas of a tumour. This is important as we know different tumours are very heterogeneous and sampling a few areas only may miss important changes that can affect treatment choices. In this study, we will note the number of patients that have leftover tissue and then, in those patients who have already signed a generic 'Tissues for Research' consent, we will homogenise their leftover tissue. For these cases we will evaluate how long this process takes, as well as the quality of the homogenised tissue for analyses.
