  • Research summary

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK and there are currently around 240,000 UK survivors. Evidence indicates that men may continue for years to have problems related to their illness or its treatment. In many instances these go unrecognised or unaddressed. Prostate Cancer UK is funding a programme of research into ways of identifying the range of concerns and needs of men living with prostate cancer and in finding ways to ensure that these are met. As part of this research we plan to use digital technology to develop a new method of patient self- assessment (an Holistic Needs Assessment instrument or HNA) which will enable men to easily identify any problems they may be experiencing and for which they would like to receive help or advice. This online HNA will generate a Care Plan which will be shared between the man and his health care professionals. The man will be able to update his HNA when he wishes and his Care Plan will be modified accordingly.
In this first phase of the study we will be asking men to try out an early version of the HNA and to take part in an interview to elicit views about its content and design.

We aim to recruit a range of men who have completed radical treatment, surgery or radiotherapy or a combination of these, men who are having treatment such as hormone therapy, and men who are being monitored by active surveillance or watchful waiting. We will recruit men identified through 2 hospital prostate cancer clinic lists and aim to include men of various ages and backgrounds and at different stages of disease. This will help us to understand any barriers to use of the HNA and to plan the second phase of the study.
