Research summary
Developing lung cancer screening in Hodgkin lymphoma survivors
Background:
Hodgkin lymphoma is curable with chemotherapy, radiotherapy or both. Survivors are at risk of developing lung cancer due to their treatment, which is a leading cause of death in HL survivors. Lung cancer screening (LCS) in smokers saves lives by detecting lung cancer at an early stage. HL survivors will not benefit from the LCS programme in England because they develop lung cancer at a younger age and the eligibility criteria do not account for their unique risk factors.
Rationale:
Inviting cancer survivors to undergo a lung cancer screening test could provoke anxiety and reduce uptake rates, thereby minimising benefit in this population. The views of HL survivors on lung cancer screening are not known.
Aim
We aim to explore the views of HL survivors on lung cancer screening, including the acceptability of screening and barriers to uptake. This knowledge will inform the design of a future lung cancer screening study in this population with the aim of optimising uptake rates.
Design
In this single site study sponsored by The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, we will invite long-term survivors of HL to participate in focus groups or telephone interviews. Participants will be recruited from the ADAPT clinical database; a database of long-term survivors of high-risk lymphomas held at The Christie Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
Participants will have survived HL for more than 5 years, be aged 18-80 and will not have a diagnosis of lung cancer currently or previously.
