Research summary
Hydrogen and methane breath testing (HMBT) is used in clinical practice in the diagnosis of microbial associated gastrointestinal conditions. Until recently there was little consensus on the performance and interpretation of these tests. This was addressed by a expert working group in north america who devised a consensus so tests were performed in a uniform manner across different test centers. Despite these efforts there are still questions about the utility of these tests in clinical practice, especially around patient selection and indications for testing. This study has been designed to identify positive predictive symptoms and risk factors for hydrogen and methane breath testing outcomes, based on new consensus parameters. Patients referred for HMBT will be approached to take part in the study and if they are willing to take part, they will be required to answer a 26 item questionnaire about symptoms and past medical history. HMBT results and questionnaire results will then be analysed to determine if certain symptoms, medications and co-morbidities are positive predictors for HMBT outcomes. The aim of this research is to provide information aid clinicians in screening patients for appropriate selection for HMBT in clinical practice and the research setting.
