  • Research summary

Testicular cancers are mostly of germ cell type. There are some established risk factors that can be seen microscopically and included in pathology reports e.g. vascular invasion. But there are factors that we are not yet aware of and are not routinely reported e.g. tissue death (necrosis) and the impact of these on prognosis (disease recurrence, distant tumour spread or death) has not yet been evaluated. It is possible either to evaluate these by a pathologist examining these features down a microscope or using a computer to digitally analyse the features. This study aims to correlate novel features including necrosis, degree of cellular atypia and number of mitoses (proliferating cells with clinical stage of disease at presentation and outcome (disease relapse, tumour spread or death in testicular germ cell tumour cases managed by the Oxford (Thames Valley Cancer Network) Supraregional Germ Cell MDT. The study will examine retrospective and prospective cases.
