Research summary
There are several hip conditions in childhood (i.e. hip dysplasia; Perthes’ disease; slipped epiphysis) that cause hip stiffness and pain, and which impact the daily activities of children. Doctors usually assess the movement of the hip with the child lying on the examination bed lying down, however this is not helpful in the assessing hip movements during activity (such as climbing stairs or running). In order to reveal the impact of the hip condition during daily activities, doctors usually ask children to complete questionnaires that ask about these daily activities (such as stand up from the bed). One such questionnaire is called the ‘PROMIS Mobility questionnaire’. However, these do not allow objective measurement of the hip mobility. This study will focus on investigating the association between the PROMIS mobility questionnaire and objectively measured physical activity recorded using activity monitors already validated in previous literature. This study will provide important insight into the validity of the PROMIS mobility questionnaire, through its connection with daily physical activity levels.
