Research summary
This application is for the first phase of a five year programme of research, funded by the National Institute for Health Research. Working with pharmacists and patients, the researchers want to find a way of discussing alcohol consumption in local pharmacies, and to see if this works for NHS patients who have an annual medicine use review (MUR) at the pharmacy. This will allow us to speak to relevant organisations about how this should be rolled out across the country if it works, and what should happen if it doesn’t.
In this first phase, the research will develop the methods for the main study, and work with patients and pharmacists to plan exactly how and when the subject of alcohol should be discussed during medication appointments. It will involve four separate studies: (1) ethnographic observation of pharmacists; (2)interviews with patients; (3) focus group discussions and workshops with patients, pharmacists and other key stakeholders; and (4) a study of how well pharmacists are able to use the new approach to discussing alcohol. This work will take 15 months to complete and be undertaken in community pharmacies in Yorkshire. Patients will be eligible if they receive MURs and are drinking more than is healthy.
