  • Research summary

    Background
High blood pressure in pregnancy affects 1 in 7 pregnant women. Women with high blood pressure in pregnancy are twice as likely to develop high blood pressure and heart disease in later life, especially women of Black African and Caribbean heritage. Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Hypertension in Pregnancy Guideline recommends that women who had a pregnancy affected by high blood pressure discuss with their general practitioner or specialist how to reduce their risk of high blood pressure and heart disease. However, research shows most pregnant women and healthcare professionals do not know about these long-term risks and do not follow the NICE recommendation.

    Aim
To raise awareness in women and healthcare professionals to support self-care for heart health in women who had high blood pressure in pregnancy.

    Design and Methods
We will conduct interviews with women who had high blood pressure in pregnancy and healthcare professionals (e.g. midwives, health visitors, general practitioners, practice nurses, obstetricians, cardiologists) providing care for pregnant and postnatal women. These interviews will help us understand the experiences, views, and needs of women and healthcare professionals in supporting self-care for heart health after pregnancy.

This study is part of a larger programme of work aimed to design a resource to aid self-care for heart health after pregnancy and to develop strategies to increase uptake of the NICE recommendation.
