  • Research summary

Aim: To work out the best way to provide community kidney health checks for high risk communities

Background: People from ethnic minority groups are five times more likely to have kidney disease and they are approximately ten years younger when they develop kidney failure. There are few symptoms kidney disease so often it is only found when kidneys are badly damaged. We think that raising awareness of kidney health and inviting people for testing in the community will allow us to find more people with early kidney disease, but we need to know:
    1. The best way to invite people to have kidney health checks
    2. If people are happy to have community kidney health checks by community peer-educators
    3. How many people being tested will have kidney disease

Design/methods: We will co-design educational material with community members to invite people to testing events and host meetings with community leaders to get their support and encourage people to attend testing events. People will be offered a urine test by trained ‘peer-educators’. They will be advised on what to do if checks are positive. People will be given the option to provide their contact details, demographics and medical history. They will be asked how they found out about the event. We will record how many people attend the events and if they have kidney disease. We will contact people who give permission who have positive and negative results to find out how they felt about the testing.

The findings of this work will be used to support applications for further funding for a future study to demonstrate impact of this community testing approaches.
