Research summary
This is a pilot study to look at whether a specific type of electrical signal can be detected in parts of the surface of the brain, next to a type of brain tumour called glioma.
Patients with these tumours often have fits (seizures), which are difficult to control either with medications or with surgery. The seizures themselves, or the medications we use to try to treat them, can be very harmful to the patients who suffer from them.
We hope to show that a particular electrical signal (called high frequency oscillations or HFOs), which has been detected in epilepsy surgeries, are present in the brain next to gliomas. In these patients with gliomas, we expect to find HFOs in those who have had seizures, and we do not expect to find them in those who have not had seizures.
During surgery to remove the tumour, we will record the areas of brain around the tumour in which we find HFOs. After the tumour surgery is completed, we will look at the post-operative brain scans to see if those areas have been removed as part of the surgery.
After their surgery, we will also assess the patients to see if those who had seizures before their operation continue to have them, or if they have reduced or stopped.
From analysing the information we collect; we hope to find whether removing the part of the brain tissue next to the tumour where we find HFOs, might help better control seizures in patients with gliomas.
