Research summary
HESSES: A feasibility study examining the management of 100 patients presenting to the Emergency Department with epistaxis (severe nose bleed). A SureStop Nasal Sponge, will be inserted into the affected nostril to stem the bleeding by a study Doctor ("nasal packing" to achieve "haemostasis"). The sponge will be removed after an hour, and the patient discharged with appropriate follow up if the bleeding has stopped. Comparison will be made with current practice whereby the pack (Rapid Rhino Product) is left in situ and the patient transferred to York District Hospital for urgent ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) assessment. SureStop is coated with a product which activates the clotting system to halt the bleeding faster than direct pressure alone. In using the new product, our aim is to reduce hospital transfers and thus increase patient service satisfaction.
