Research summary
The current treatment for abdominal hernia repair involves the use of polymeric meshes, which provide support for the tissues in the abdominal wall during the healing process. However, these meshes showed a high incidence of inflammation, poor integration in the host tissue which could be due to the fact that those meshes do not mimic the native tissue.
The study aims to characterize human posterior rectus sheath, one of the layers in the abdominal wall involved in the hernia repair.
In order to achieve this purpose, mechanical properties and ultrastructure of the tissue will be measured, cells will be isolated and their biological behaviour will be analyzed, comparing cells from herniated tissue with those from non herniated tissue.
Participants to this study will be recruited among patients at UCLH (University College London Hospitals) and St George's Hospital, with no evidence of recurrence. The tissue samples will be collected during the surgery from the clinician performing the medical procedure. The study will last until the end of the PhD project.REC name
