Research summary
Patients with muscle weakness are often referred for neurophysiology tests. These tests involve nerve conduction studies in which sticky pads are placed on the skin over muscles and brief electrical pulses are used to make the muscles contract. The response of the muscles is then measured.
These tests are nearly always performed on muscles of the hand. It is possible that there are simple patterns in the results that can help doctors to make diagnoses. In this study we will undertake such recordings as usual. The findings will then be pooled with those from centres around the world to see if there are patterns that are diagnostic for patients with different causes of muscle weakness.
