Research summary
This study is being undertaken in a single NHS hospital site on patients who are referred to the foot and ankle clinic with a suspected diagnosis of adult flat foot. The Chief Investigator of the study has recently described a new clinical test (known as the 'Heel Neutral, Lateral Push Test') which is a way of assessing an important ligament within the foot which is known to cause a flat foot when it fails. This ligament is known as the 'Spring Ligament'. This test was performed on cadavers and our aim is now to establish it is both reproducible and valid in live subjects. As this is a new clinical test we now need to undertake a process known as 'validation' to establish how reliable it is. This study will aim to recruit patients over the age of 18 years old, who are able to give informed consent and are referred with a suspected diagnosis of adult flat foot. Recruited patients will be involved only for the duration of their clinic appointment and will undergo the 'Heel Neutral, Lateral Push' test as part of their normal clinical examination. This test will be carried out by two doctors independantly of each other and their measurements compared to determine how reliable this technique is for establishing failure of the spring ligament.
