Research summary
A gynaecological has been known to have negative effects on wellbeing and on quality of life, not only in the acute phase of treatment, but up to many years after treatment. A cancer diagnosis has been shown as a potential opportunity for individuals to ‘change their lives’ by adopting new healthier lifestyles such as reduction in negative behaviours including smoking and eating unhealthy foods. However, there is also evidence to support that cancer survivors do not make healthier lifestyle changes.
The Recovery package is a series of key interventions which aim to improve outcomes for people living with and beyond cancer. Health and wellbeing events are one of these interventions which ‘aim to enhance supported self-management and improve information and support’ (Macmillan, 2014). A health and wellbeing clinic aims to provide ‘accurate, relevant and trustworthy information’, a more ‘systematic, proactive approach to cancer care and rehabilitation to aid recovery improving outcomes’ aiming to reduce unnecessary use of health and social care resources. Emphasise empowerment so patients are confident in managing their own care, accessing appropriate resources, information and support, and encourage a healthy lifestyle. To move away from the ‘one size fits all’ approach and provide patient-centred care where clinical, psychological and practical needs are considered.
The 3 health and wellbeing events will be held at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and are provided to all patients on follow up either here or at the units. these events are only half day, but our proposed follow up will last for 6 months to determine the impact.REC name
