Research summary
This study aims to investigate the experience of children with a Complex Chronic Condition (CCC) when they are admitted to a London Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). This study aims to interview children aged 6-18 with CCC following an admission to a London PICU, using an individual face-to-face semi-structured open-ended interviewing technique. The participants will also be asked to do drawings about their experiences. Patients will be identified whilst as an inpatient to the study site’s hospital, using a detailed inclusion/exclusion criteria, and will have interviews once they have been discharged home. Up to 10 participants will be interviewed, until data saturation is reached. Although most participants will only be interviewed once, some participants may find a longer interview tiring and may require a follow up interview. Questions will be asked about their experience of their admission to PICU, not to seek historical accuracy, but to focus on the story constructed by the participant. The study will last from when ethical approval is granted (~25th June 2018) until 30th November 2018.\n\nA CCC can be defined as “Any medical condition that can be reasonably expected to last at least 12 months (unless death intervenes) and to involve either several different organ systems or 1 organ system severely enough to require specialty pediatric care and probably some period of hospitalization in a tertiary care center” (Feutdner et al., 2000: p206). This group of patients may be susceptible to acute illnesses, requiring frequent admissions to hospital, requiring care on the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) (Mullen, 2008). \n
