  • Data collection arrangements

Data for this project will be collected through a secure project website. We will ask participants who agree to join the study to provide information on their name, address, date of birth, gender, job, and ethnicity. We will also ask for details about how they live (their mood, how much physical exercise they take, smoking and alcohol habits) and what they think of the project in general and the project website. We will also ask that individuals give us permission to access and use information about them from their NHS records.\nWe will use the answers to the questions given on the website, together with the information from the NHS records, to answer questions about health and wellbeing\nin Wales. We will use participants’ contact details to:\n• Contact individuals every 6 months or so, to complete additional questions about their lifestyle, health and wellbeing.\n• Access their NHS records, such as hospital admissions and visits to the GP.\n• Get in touch with participants about specific studies that they might like to be a part of. For example, there may be new studies in the future that are relevant to them because they are a particular age or have a particular health condition.\nWe will store the information given to us securely.

  • Research programme

HealthWise Wales is a national initiative to involve large numbers of people in Wales with health and social care research. Our aim is to improve the health and wellbeing of the Welsh population, by engaging them in the research process. Such a study will allow us to investigate a wide range of social, environmental and biological determinants of health and wellbeing throughout individuals’ lives. This could lead to improved treatment, more effective services, and reduce differences in health between individuals and communities, by answering questions such as “Why are some people in Wales healthier than others even though they live in the same area?” or “Why are people admitted to hospital in Wales and what can we do so less people are admitted?”\nHealthWise Wales is a partnership between the public and the scientific community in Wales. It is funded by Health and Care Research Wales which has responsibility for research in the NHS in Wales. The day to day running of the study will be done by a team of researchers based in Cardiff University.
