Research summary
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) refers to a group of lung conditions characterized by airways inflammation, small airways obstruction and progressive loss of lung function. There are 900,000 people diagnosed with COPD in England and Wales but allowing for under-diagnosis, the true prevalence could be 1.5 million. Sufferers are extensive health care users; where COPD is the second most common cause of emergency hospital admission in the UK with direct NHS costs over £800 million per year. Despite Pulmonary Rehabilitation programs (PRPs) educating and supporting patients, the waiting-list for such programs can be long; during which time the patient is largely self-managing their condition. Studies investigating the efficacy of rehabilitation programs include baseline measures pre-PR. However, this data often fails to consider the profile of patients who do not attend or how adequately waiting list patients are informed to self-manage their condition and the influence this may have on their subsequent uptake of PR.
This study aims to address this limitation by sampling patients with COPD who are on a waiting-list for PR. Approximately 150 waiting list patients will be invited to complete questionnaires measuring health related quality of life, confidence and motivation to self-manage their condition, disease knowledge of COPD, and the impact of the COPD on their psychological need satisfaction. This information will be gathered in conjunction with patient clinical data including hospitalizations and GP visits during the last 6 months as well as the length of time the patient is on the waiting list ahead of being invited to start PR. Analysis will provide a profile of waiting list patient status and service utilisation as well as enabling consideration of how these factors predict uptake of PR.REC name
