  • Research summary

Study length - 6 months. Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB patients who have previously been invited via their GP surgery to a health check, will be approached via their GP surgery by letter and asked to take part in a short interview about attendance at the health check programme. With consent in place, an interview will be arranged, at their convenience and they will be asked a number of questions about potential barriers to attending the appointment. The patients will be asked to complete a short questionnaire in addition to the interview. A number of staff (Health Care Support Workers and GP surgery staff) will be interviewed also to obtain their views regarding potential barriers to attendance and possible solutions. The interviews will be analysed to determine any common themes regarding barriers. The questionnaire and attendance statistics will also be analysed to determine if there are any commonalities or differences in the participants who do and do not attend health checks currently, (for example age, location, social status). The purpose of the study is to identify the main reasons and barriers to non-attendance at the health check. The findings can be used by the service providers to optimise future service offering and uptake of the health check programme in Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board (CTMUHB). (Currently less than half of those invited attend). There have been other studies that have looked at non-attendance to health checks in England and a study was completed in 2017 in Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB). The participant group for ABUHB was small and the study findings to date will not necessarily be representative and meaningful for CTMUHB population.
