Research summary
Head and neck cancers include cancers of the oral cavity (mouth), pharynx (throat), and larynx (voice box). Collectively they are he 6th most common cancer in the world. Survival from head and neck cancer is poor (around half of people with head and neck cancer are alive at 5 years). One of the important factors in survival is the stage at presentation with patients who present with tumours at a late stage having considerably worse survival. This study aims to determine factors associated with late stage of presentation of head and neck cancers.
Methods include:
* Multi-centres (n=11) in Europe and South America recruiting patients with head and neck cancer (n=100 per centre).
* Interview using life-style behaviour questionnaire with specific questions on delay associated with diagnosis.
* Blood, oral rinse, and saliva samples from patients
* Tumour tissue samples (from either diagnostic biopsy or surgical resection)
* Clinical, treatment, pathological, and survival/outcome information collected from medical records at 12 months post diagnosis.REC name
